Lisfranc Fractures

What is a Lisfranc Fracture?

In medical terms, a Lisfranc fracture is defined as an “injury of the foot in which one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus.” You football fans might recall that Santonio Holmes of the New York Jets sustained a Lisfranc fracture which required him to have surgery and put him out for a season. So, if you suspect a Lisfranc fracture, you’re in good company!

What causes Lisfranc fractures?

Lisfranc fractures can occur with a slip or a fall, twisting during athletic activity, an unfortunate misstep, or direct trauma.

How do we treat it?

Depending on the severity of your fracture, we might recommend a cast and careful activity modification to recover successfully. However, for more severe cases we would probably need to discuss surgery.
